Most of our guests eat outside at The Eatery, at tables under the trees. It’s relaxed, there’s room to spread out, and nobody minds a bit of noise.

- For dogs: well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the garden.
- For parents: a proper lunch. The Chicken Pie is our most famous dish, and a slice of milktart fixes most moods.

After lunch, the older kids can wander through the estate: vinyl at AvoRecords, second-hand books at WormWood Books and art at Artichoke Gallery.
Fossils and caves in the Cradle of Humankind
Kids who love dinosaurs usually love where humans came from too. Maropeng is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind, with hands-on exhibitions that make a lot of big ideas easy to grasp.
Older children often enjoy the Sterkfontein Caves, where important fossils like “Mrs. Ples” and “Little Foot” were found. Cave tours involve steps and narrow sections, so check the details before you take very young children.
A farm stop
The Magaliesburg area is farming country. A stop at Van Gaalen Cheese Farm is a local favourite, and a good chance to stock up on cheese for the week.
Walks and open space
If the family likes to move, the Magaliesberg has walking and hiking options for all levels. Mountain Sanctuary Park is known for its trails and mountain pools. Rules for dogs and day visitors differ from place to place, so check before you go and book if needed.
